Current Demand and Booking Trends in the Digital Travel Industry – Seeing the Current Crises as an Opportunity
Invitation to the VIR Online Summit 2024, featuring statistics, facts, and background information, on Friday, March 1, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
2024 promises to be an extremely exciting year in terms of the global political landscape—with major elections taking place in key countries such as the United States, as well as elections for the European Parliament. The travel industry is therefore undergoing a period of upheaval, and significant future challenges such as climate change and climate protection, as well as the shortage of skilled workers, must be addressed with appropriate measures.
What opportunities and challenges do current developments present for the tourism industry? How did the tourism sector perform in 2023? And what are the current trends in demand and bookings, particularly in the digital sector? What is the financial impact of tourism on vacation destinations and city breaks?
The Association of Internet Travel Distribution (VIR), which represents the digital tourism sector, is examining these and other questions based on the latest survey results from three studies on the online travel industry. These findings are summarized in the “VIR Facts & Figures on the Online Travel Market 2024.”
We cordially invite you to:

Michael Buller, a long-time member of the VIR Executive Board and, among other roles, a member of the German government’s current Tourism Advisory Council, will comment on the study’s findings and the outlook for the German tourism industry, with a particular focus on digital tourism.
Ulf Sonntag, Managing Director of the NIT and Head of FUR Travel Analysis, looks back at tourism demand in 2023 in the German source market and provides an outlook on vacation plans for the current year. A special focus will be placed on the current crises affecting tourism. How are vacation demand, information-seeking and booking behavior, as well as preferences for vacation types and destinations, evolving in these turbulent times?
Roland Gaßner, Director of Business Development at Travel Data + Analytics GmbH, uses current booking data from the German tour operator market to highlight which products and destinations are showing particularly encouraging trends for the 2024 travel season.
Oliver Gabriel, Director of Business Development Advisors at Mastercard, will use aggregated and anonymized Mastercard transaction data to highlight trends and differences in value creation and spending behavior across travel-related categories among cardholders in Europe’s top five source markets—including Germany.
