ITB Berlin: “Germany’s Tourism Market: Perspectives on TourismPolicy”

On the ITB Berlin Conference In 2022, Dr. Robert Habeck, Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, delivered a keynote address at the opening of the tourism fair. In his speech, he spoke about the The Importance of Tourism for Peace, because when people travel, they leave their familiar surroundings behind, have new experiences, and meet other people, which makes tolerance and international understanding a part of everyday life. That is why he sees the ITB as a sign of hope for the industry, but also as a sign that it will once again be possible to,  in a world to share experiences with one another.

Dr. Habeck also pointed out that the tourism industry was one of the sectors hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Government support measures were therefore necessary, and these would also demonstrate the particular importance of the tourism industry to policymakers. After all, tourism is also a major economic factor in Germany. While Germany is a popular travel destination, Germans are also “world champions of travel,” which is why the tourism industry is also significant as an economic factor in many other countries.

The federal minister also addressed the tourism industry’s consumption of fossil fuels. A fresh start after the pandemic should therefore also be a fresh start toward sustainability and climate neutrality. He views climate protection in tourism as an extension of what tourism is all about: preserving the Earth as a place worth living in and making it a space for people to experience. The government is committed to this goal, and that is where state support should be directed.

Following the speech, there were a few questions. Among other things, the topic of the shortage of skilled workers came up. Dr. Habeck explained that the federal government would be taking steps to address the problem, for example by creating better working conditions, making it easier to recruit skilled workers from abroad, and providing pre-employment training abroad.

Below is the video from ITB featuring Dr. Habeck's speech.
