The Association of Internet Travel Distribution (VIR) is the leading trade association for the German digital travel industry and is actively involved in tourism market research. The association continuously analyzes developments within the travel industry and their implications—particularly with regard to digital business models, online distribution, and technological innovations in tourism.
Tourism is one of Germany’s most dynamic and innovative economic sectors. Constant change, new technologies, and social trends present the industry with a wide range of challenges—while also opening up promising opportunities for the future. To make these developments measurable, tourism statistics, market research, and scientifically sound data are indispensable. They form the basis for strategic decisions and the sustainable development of Germany as a tourism destination.
As part of its research and analysis work, VIR conducts its own studies—including the annual “VIR Facts & Figures on the Online Travel Market” —and participates in other external research projects in collaboration with renowned market research institutes. The focus is on the German travel market, particularly digital tourism, travelers’ booking and information-seeking behaviors, and current trends in the tourism industry.
VIR Facts & Figures on the Online Travel Market 2026
The publication “VIR Data & Facts on the Online Travel Market” is published annually and covers data from 2011 to 2026. The current 2026 edition includes, among other things:
The 21st edition of “VIR Data & Facts on the Online Travel Market” is a comprehensive tourism market research and industry analysis for the year 2025. The report analyzes current demand and booking trends in Germany’s digital travel industry and provides key tourism statistics and market indicators.
The findings show that the German travel market has undergone further structural changes in 2025. For 77% of all trips, at least one travel service is now booked online—up from 74% in 2024. At the same time, one in six people in Germany (17%) has already used artificial intelligence for travel planning. Despite economic uncertainties, travel remains an integral part of life for people in Germany. The German travel market is thus not undergoing spectacular growth, but rather profound structural changes: it is becoming more price-conscious, more digital, and increasingly AI-driven—all while demand remains robust.
Additional tourism studies
Market research provides insight into the current state of a market and allows for the comparison of results over time. In the tourism industry, this aspect is of paramount importance to businesses and should therefore not be overlooked, as it enables companies to actively track trends within their target audience and ensure that decisions are consistently aligned with that audience and its needs.
To ensure that we always have access to well-founded and up-to-date insights, we also work closely with other tourism partners and specialized market research firms. This allows us to receive regular, comprehensive reports, reliable key metrics, and valuable trend analyses, which provide a solid foundation for strategic decisions.
"ReiseZukunft" Research Unit for In-Store Travel Sales
In addition to rtk, Kermax, and Reiseland, the Verband Internet Reisevertrieb e.V. is a co-founder and, for more than two years, a sponsor ofthe “ReiseZukunft” research unit. This initiative is implemented by the CENTOURIS research institute and funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development, and Energy. The goal is to provide companies in the tourism industry—with a particular focus on brick-and-mortar travel agencies—with groundbreaking market research findings on how they can position themselves in the future regarding key topics such as digitalization, innovative business models, and service and product innovation, in order to ensure long-term success in travel sales and keep travel attractive in the future.
To this end, the “ReiseZukunft” project serves as a catalyst by offering labs, webinars, and orientation portals, and regularly publishes key research findings to help stakeholders stay abreast of market opportunities and customer needs. In addition, several studies are currently underway that examine, among other things, consumer acceptance of artificial intelligence systems. The focus is always on the goal of (further) accelerating the industry’s digital transformation and securing additional government support to that end.
